Naming & History

The lapis lazuli takes its name from the Arabic language. The word "azul" (sky), which comes from the Arabic language, was later added to the Latin word "lapis" (stone), from which the name lapis lazuli developed. Lapis lazuli was a coveted commodity long before Christ. From these beautiful artistic objects were then created. Lapis lazuli was considered one of the finest grave goods by the ancient Egyptians, so this precious stone was incorporated into Tutankhamun's mask.
